CHURCH @ the Academy – 5th December 2010

The third “Church at the Academy” event took place amid the winter snow, and yet 108 hardy souls braved the chills and spills of icy roads and pavements to gather to worship at Bucksburn Academy and anticipate the Birth of Jesus.
The coffee and muffins has been a great success as a prelude to worship, giving an opportunity for informal chat and catching up before heading through from the Dining Hall into the Assembly Hall for the Service. It being the Second Sunday in Advent, another candle was lit on the Advent Ring, and news was given of the journey of “Mary and Joseph” around Newshills and Bucksburn on their way to Bethlehem. Some of our number spoke about the “meaning of Christmas” for them and how it still retains a special excitement and wonder as they reflect on God’s greatest gift to the world – Jesus. Listening again to the story of the Angel Gabriel announcing to Mary the incredible news that she would be the mother of the Saviour of the World, we considered that for a young person, an older person, a forgotten person and important people, the Christmas Story has a powerful relevance and assurance of God’s unfailing love.
As the strains of “Hark! the herald angels sing” drifted away, we shall reflect not only on an innovative style and place for worship, but also the amazing message that time does not dull, that we are all loved by God and Christmas proves it.
