Sermon title: Jesus, His Mother Mary and that (Controversial) First Miracle
Introduction: Controversies over the account flow from thinking humanly: cf. Isaiah 55: 8-9.
We need to think differently: Paul - “We walk by faith and not by sight.” (2 Cor 5:7)
FOUR THINGS TO “SEE” WITH THE EYES OF FAITH IN JOHN
1] JESUS DID NOT ‘STAGE THE EVENT.’ (vv 1-2) He attended a Wedding with His Mother.
2] JESUS DID NOT ‘DECIDE TO IMPRESS.’ (vv 3-4) His Mother, Mary, initiated the discussion.
3) JESUS’ AUTHORITY WAS NOT ‘COMPROMISED.’ (v 5-6) Mary said “Do whatever He says.” (v 5)
4) JESUS SHOWED KINGDOM REALITY. (vv 7-10) “You have saved the good wine till now.” (v 10)
Epilogue: John 1-11 shows the first of John’s selected 7 Miracles. So, not ‘the first miracle,’ but the first of seven revealing Jesus’ Glory to Faith. The ‘New Wine’ describes a joyful new relationship with God through Jesus, our Bridegroom, to whom we are betrothed in new life.
